Song of the week: Little Dimples by JJ Lin

I’ll be short and snappy about this one. This week’s focus is on JJ Lin’s duet with Charlene Choi (from the Hong-Kong group  Twins): 小酒窝 (Little Dimples).

Basically: The music is pretty. The MV is cute. The lyrics are sweet and meaningful. The artist JJ Lin is a BAMF (no joke).

Conclusion: ♥ HEART ♥ and you should go listen to it 😉

Song of the Week: Only Have Feelings for You

Two versions of this song available: Fahrenheit’s duet with S.H.E.’s Hebe, and JJ Lin’s version. Both are excellent!

The duet version first came out in 2006 as an insert song in the Taiwanese drama Tokyo Juliet. It’s cute, reflecting the image of a happy couple (mostly because their voices flow together nicely and the lyrics seem to reflect their heart-felt emotions to each other).

On the other hand, JJ Lin twists things up a bit. He incorporates more guitar and drums into the instrumental, giving the whole song a bad boy, rock’n’roll feel. But, the original lyrics and meaning is still there, sort of like the idea that even the rowdiest hooligan can also be tamed by love.

I recommend the first for those of you who love cute things. JJ Lin’s version is more upbeat and suited for those who like mainstream music. But, check both of them out! They’re definitely the type of song that will lift up your spirits if you’ve been down like me recently. Enjoy~ :3

Rediscovering JJ Lin

Rediscovering, in this case, is the act of realizing how pro and epic your favorite singer is. It happens when you first discover an amazing artist, forget about him/her for a few…months or so (because there are so many amazing artists out there), and realize how amazing he/she is when the next album releases (or when you spontaneously hear an old favorite song on the radio after a very long time). I absolutely love this feeling, but I have also found that timing plays a vital role in enhancing the, how should I put it, intensity…of the emotion.

Such a case recently happened when I was browsing through some old videos of JJ Lin playing the piano at one of his concerts (on a side note: his concerts are the best, especially because he believes in singing his songs in front of his fans instead of lip-syncing even if he is sick and his throat’s dying.). His piano skills remain unscratched by time; his voice is as beautiful and clear…and high…and emotional as before–perhaps this is the reason why all of his duets with female artists end up portraying a sweet romantic relationship between a happy couple.

When I first discovered JJ Lin, I foolishly though that his voice, like a lot of other singers, was the reason why he has become so successful today (by the way, did I mention that his English is very fluent and easy to understand :D?). I was even somewhat surprised that he knew how to play the piano so well (yes, I was an idiot back then -_-“). It was only recently that I gained a better understanding of his musical talent.

Anyways, in the videos I watched he played and sang some of his own, now-to-be-considered-classical songs and some of my favorite songs from other artists. At first, this seemed a little weird: how he sang other people’s song at a concert with the original singers sitting in the audience. It was later that I realized he composed the background music for the other songs, and truly, they are amazing, especially his slow, emotional songs of bitter-sweet romance. I personally think that his compositions are a better fit for himself instead of the artists he wrote them for (not that the original artists are bad or anything; JJ Lin’s just better).
